Welcome to the inaugural post of our new blog on our new microsite. This will likely be my first and last post as our tech team will immediately take over and write of things Pythonic and Djangoriffic. However, before that happens, I wanted to offer some thoughts on our decision to make our Python and Django development more externally facing.
Imaginary Landscape has been in the business of developing Web sites since 1995. Up until recently, no one really cared about the underlying technology - at least not our typical clients. Our decisionmakers come primarily from marketing departments. They don't care about the sausagemaking process, just the results. As long as we could solve the business problem, how we did it was inconsequential.
So, our “main” Web site takes a decidedly non-technical slant. Solutions to business problems, white papers on search engine marketing, industry expertise by Imaginary alum Ian Bicking. Just a little to show we have gravitas, but not too much to scare away the buyers.
More recently, we have been approached specifically because we are a Python shop and a Django shop. These queries undoubtedly came from our sponsorships of PyCon 2008 and 2009, as well as DjangoCon 2009 but it got us thinking. Would a strong and dedicated Python/Django Web presence help us connect to organizations looking for these specific specialties? And so we launch the grand experiment.
We also wanted to have some fun. We saw all the pictures of the pink unicorn at DjangoCon and we were rolling in the aisles. So we bought a pretty pink Pegasus pony and a handsome golden python. Together, they will travel throughout Chicago and beyond (I hear Atlanta is warm in February) bringing their memories back in a series of photo galleries. We may even open up the gallery to submissions, as long as they aren't too dirty.
When all is said and done, Imaginary Landscape is a business and it is our goal to make a profit. But we want to do so responsibly and respectfully, and have a little fun along the way. It's how we've stayed in business for the last 14 years and it's how we will continue to stay in business for the next 14 (I'd say "and beyond" but if I'm not on a beach by then, something is very, very wrong).
